Learner: Sivkheng Lim         Learning Coach:  Miriam Kamsteeg      Date:26 Feb 2015
Learning Area: Literacy - Reading
Learning Observed
Sivkheng was reading a book called “Sailor” to me. She was able to read “I am” by herself and I had to tell her “climbing” and I pointed to the picture. Then next page Sivkheng read “I am” and looked at the picture and said “walking”. She continued to use the picture cues to guide her reading for the rest of the book. On the last page the sailors are pouring buckets of water onto a sleeping sailor. I asked her why they might be doing that. She replied, “to wake him up!”
Evidence of learning

Sivkheng started to use the pictures to help her reading. I wonder if this will continue in her next book tomorrow?
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Sivkheng started school at the beginning of the month and is still developing her basic sight vocab. She scored 2 years 10 months in the Oral Language assessment and 47/ 54 for the Letter Identification assessment. She showed that she was developing her capabilities by remembering the basic sight words “I” and “am”. Sivkheng is using picture cues to help her read the story (Using Language Symbols and Texts). She had thought about the last picture and was able to articulate why it might occur (Thinking)
Next Learning Steps
  • Assess how many basic sight words she knows
  • Encourage reading her reader each night at home
  • Specific teaching to focus her attention to the beginning letter of each word as well as the picture
